On 23 April a new sustainable incubator was opened near Amstel Station. Copper8 and Cocon Vastgoed led an initiative to completely sustainably transform the 8th floor of the 100 Watt building to provide office space to sustainable entrepreneurs. This iconic project in the field of sustainability and the circular economy came about through a unique collaboration between the project founders, architects O+A, carpet tile manufacturer Interface and Gispen. In a unique way, the project shows the beauty of sustainability, and was realized well within budget.
In many ways, ‘sustainability’ is visibly reflected in the office space. It has been built using materials from the demolition of other iconic Amsterdam houses, the carpet tiles from Interface are made of 100% recycled yarn that comes from used fishing nets, the ceilings are sprayed with acoustic material made of old newspapers, and there is LED lighting installed. Copper8 also had its equipment designed in a circular fashion with Gispen: there is a balance between ‘experienced’ furniture, tables made from reclaimed wood and furniture that retains its value over time.
On the 8th floor, 350m2 is still available for sustainable companies to rent. The office provides an open space, in which each company also has privacy thanks to the layout design. The facilities, such as meeting rooms and storage cupboards, are shared. The contractual agreements between Copper8 and Cocon are also noteworthy: they are extremely start-up friendly and take into account small and growing organizations.
