Circular HVAC systems

The role of building services is growing rapidly. At the same time, evidence is mounting that the environmental impact of technical installations is substantially underestimated in current calculations and assessments. As the sector moves towards Paris-Proof buildings, optimising building services is emerging as one of the most powerful opportunities to reduce environmental impact while improving building performance.

What we can offer

By integrating building services from the earliest design stages and steering decisions based on environmental impact, new opportunities emerge to make different choices. This leads to smarter buildings that use fewer materials while delivering better performance. In the transition towards Paris-Proof buildings, this shift in thinking presents significant opportunities. We help organisations drive this transition through:

  • Research into the true impact of building services, providing insight into the material use and environmental footprint of technical installations.
  • Strategic policy analysis to identify what is needed to create a more circular value chain for HVAC and climate control systems.
  • Assessments of HVAC system portfolios at organisational or asset-portfolio level, including analysis of the use of critical raw materials.
  • Strategic advisory services for organisations active across the building services value chain that seek to reduce environmental impact and/or dependency on critical raw materials.
  • Decision-making frameworks for ambitious projects, enabling project teams to optimise designs and make better-informed choices by explicitly considering environmental impact.

Our experience

We have been working for several years to raise awareness and accelerate action on circular building services and HVAC systems. Our work includes:

  • Building knowledge from existing frontrunners and best practices. For TKI Urban Energy, we analysed circular business cases and key tipping points based on a range of inspiring real-world examples.
  • Providing policy advice for circular HVAC systems. We contributed to the Roadmap for Circular HVAC Systems by mapping existing and upcoming policies, and carried out a policy analysis for the Product Group Analysis on HVAC Systems as part of the ICER 2027 review.
  • Creating insight into the composition of building services portfolios. For a major Dutch real estate asset manager, we assessed the share of critical raw materials used in building services systems and identified opportunities to reduce supply chain and resource risks.
  • Initiating independent research, including studies into the true environmental impact of building services and technical installations.
