Critical Raw Materials (CRMs)

The economy of the future depends on critical raw materials. The energy transition, mobility transition, digitalisation, defence sector, and construction challenges all place growing demands on critical raw materials. As a result, the way we manage these resources will play a decisive role in the success of the transitions ahead. A circular economy for critical materials can reduce geopolitical dependencies, lower environmental impacts, and mitigate social risks across value chains.

Our experience

For nearly a decade, we have been building knowledge, insight, and action around critical raw materials. We work with national governments, energy companies, investors, and NGOs to better understand material dependencies and develop strategies that strengthen resilience and support the transition to a circular economy.

Our experience includes:

  • System-level analyses of critical raw material demand in the energy system, carried out for organisations including the Dutch Ministry of Climate and Green Growth (KGG) and Greenpeace.
  • Policy advice on circular strategies to reduce demand for critical raw materials, including work for the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management (I&W).
  • Supporting organisations in developing circular strategies to reduce material demand, such as advising Eneco on circularity measures as part of its bid for an offshore wind tender.
